Caskets by Design is owned and operated by the husband and wife team of Mike and Terri Hurley. Terri efficiently manages product sales, product shipping and materials procurement, while Mike skillfully uses his many years of of woodworking experience to transform simple wood planks into beautiful wood caskets. They both pitch in and finish off by lining and wrapping them up for shipment.
When things get real busy their son Jeff helps out with sawing and squaring the rough lumber into usable planks, and fitting the planks into a semi-finished casket or coffin. When not helping out here, Jeff spends his time working at his forge creating beautiful hand crafted custom knives, you can check out his work here.
While they do sell direct to the public at wholesale prices, they also sell to funeral homes and other handlers. Over the years they've made hundreds of caskets and coffins for both people and pets, not to mention Halloween coffins and also custom caskets that have been used in TV, film and stage.

Traditionally, caskets have been sold only by funeral homes. But now, under the Funeral Rule, you can buy a casket from an outside source and have it shipped directly to the funeral home. The Funeral Rule also requires funeral homes to agree to use a casket you bought elsewhere, and doesn’t allow them to charge you a fee for using it.
Funeral Industry-friendly laws and regulations can force you to spend more than you want to on a casket or coffin, and while you are free to buy a casket anywhere you like, some states are still trying to keep out competition by outlawing outside casket sales.
For many years, the funeral home industry practice was to wrap the cost of the funeral service into the sale price of caskets, with a mark-up of 300-500-700% or more. The average cost of a funeral in the U.S. is ($8,755) thats almost three times that in Great Britain and more than twice what it is in France or Australia.
